So, you're looking for a Boston, huh? Good! I love Bostons!!! But, have you done your research? Are you aware of the health issues that can be inherent in a Boston? There are several including inherited cataracts, luxating patellas (knee caps that slip in & out of the joint), deafness, hemivertebrae and occassionally even heart problems. A good resource for some of that type of information is the New Puppy Owner's Book available online through the Boston Terrier Club of America's Health website.
Be sure you ask any breeder from whom you may purchase one of these jewels what tests have been done, how often and ask to see the paperwork if you can't find the test results online at the OFA website. At a minimum, the parents (dam and sire) should have been BAER, CERF and patella tested (see more about these issues in the Boston Health Info page) and the puppies should be BAER tested before going to their new homes. Ideally, they should be CERF tested as well, but sometimes due to CERF clinic schedules, it is not always possible. Some breeders are now starting to x-ray the spine for hemivertebra as well as do cardiac testing. Most of these results are viewable on the OFA website, if the owners submitted the information. BAER and spine x-rays need only be done once in a lifetime. CERF testing should be done annually, while cardiac and patella testing is only due every 2 years. BAER testing is acceptable any time after 7 weeks of age, CERF testing any time after 8 weeks of age and spine x-rays any time after 12 weeks of age. Patella and cardiac may be done at any time; however the results cannot be certified until the dog is 1 year old, so many breeders will have a "pre-lim" performed when the dog is a puppy and the official test done when it is an adult.
Hooray!!! We have new PUPPIES!!!! Click over to my Puppy page and watch them grow up.
If you are interested in being on my waiting list, please download the Puppy Application. Complete and return it to puppies@chrimasobostons.com. Upon approval, I will notify you and put you on the list. Since Bostons have very small litters (usually only 2-4), I highly recommend you get on several breeders' lists, so don't be shy about asking to be on more than one!
Please check back as sometimes there are rescue dogs or retired dogs available from me or other reputable breeders. If you are looking for a rescue, a good place to start is www.bostonsbythebay.com. If you are looking for a well bred Boston, a good place to meet reputable breeders is at dog shows. To find a dog show in your area, visit www.infodog.com and search by state and then scroll down to a date that works for you.
